The WTA Dubai Tennis Championships 2024 or WTA Dubai Open 2024 will feature a star-studded field of players, led by World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka. The WTA 1000 event comes right after the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, where Swiatek claimed her third consecutive title by defeating Elena Rybakina in straight sets. Rybakina also reached the final in Dubai last year, while Coco Gauff made it to the semifinals. Gauff, however, had an early exit in Doha, losing to Katerina Siniakova in the second round.
Swiatek, Sabalenka, Rybakina and Gauff are the top four seeds in Dubai, marking the first time since the Australian Open that the top four players on the WTA tour are competing in the same tournament. The Dubai Open will have a 56-player main draw, with eight byes for the top eight seeds.
Seven of the top 10 players in the world are in the event, with a total of 10 Grand Slam titles among them. The absentees are Ons Jabeur (No. 5), Jessica Pegula (No. 7) and Karolina Muchova (No. 10), who are all sidelined with injuries. Jabeur has a bad knee, Pegula has a neck problem and Muchova has a wrist issue. Pegula is expected to return at the San Diego Open starting on February 26th. Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova also withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury.
Top-seed Swiatek will start her campaign in the second round against 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who is a wildcard entry. Swiatek could face a tough challenge in the third round from two-time Dubai winner Elina Svitolina (No. 8), who triumphed in 2017 and 2018. Swiatek’s quarter also includes Jelena Ostapenko (No. 9), the 2017 French Open champion, and Qinwen Zheng (No. 6), the surprise finalist at the Australian Open this year.
Second-seed Sabalenka, who won her second straight Australian Open title last month, will also begin in the second round against either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or a qualifier. Sabalenka’s potential quarterfinal opponent could be Marketa Vondrousova (No. 5), the 2019 French Open runner-up, or Maria Sakkari (No. 11), who reached the semifinals in Doha. Sabalenka’s section also features former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber and rising star Leylah Fernandez.
If the seeds hold, Swiatek and Sabalenka could meet in a blockbuster final, but they will have to overcome some formidable opponents in the semifinals. Swiatek could face Gauff (No. 4), who has won three titles in the past year, or Zheng (No. 6), who has been a revelation in 2024. Sabalenka could clash with Rybakina (No. 3), who has been consistent at the WTA 1000 level, or Vondrousova (No. 5), who has a versatile game. Swiatek leads Sabalenka 6-3 in their head-to-head, but they have not played since 2022.
