List of athletes to cross 90m mark in men’s javelin throw

There have been only few athletes who have been able to touch the 90m mark in Javelin throw.

The Javelin throw has been one of the most difficult events in track and field. It requires sheer power and also technique. There have been no world records in the men’s event since 1996. Close to three decades, athletes have been struggling to consistently throw over 90m at the event.

There have been only 24 athletes so far who have managed to breach the 90m mark in men’s javelin throw. Max Dehning is the youngest athlete to breach the 90m mark as he did at the age of 19. He threw 90.20m in February 2024.

Kimmo Kinnunen of Finland was the first athlete to breach the 90m mark in men’s Javelin throw. He did it in 1991 at the National stadium in Tokyo, Japan. He threw 90.82m which was a world record during that time.

Chao-Tsun Cheng became the first Asian athlete to breach the 90m mark in 2017 at Taipei Municipal Stadium. He recorded a throw of 91.36m.

Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan holds the Olympic record in the event. He threw 92.97m during the finals of Paris Olympics 2024.

Jan Zelezny holds the world record of 98.48m which he threw in 1996. He is also the only athlete to win three consecutive Olympic golds in men’s javelin throw. He won gold in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

Zelezny is considered to be a legend and icon in the sport of Javelin throw. With world records, Olympic titles the athlete from Czech Republic has proved how great he was. His record still being chased by athletes proves his mettle.

Only Johannes Vetter has come close to breaking the world record ever since. Vetter threw 97.76m in 2020 which was the only instance of Zelezny’s record being in danger. For over three decades athletes have been trying to touch the 90m mark.

Germany has been the powerhouse for Javelin throws as they have six athletes who have breached the 90m mark. Overall the 90m mark has been recorded 126 times in the history of men’s javelin. These are all ratified records which have been included.

On that note, let’s look at the top 90m throws in men’s Javelin throw. An athlete is only mentioned once as his best throw over 90m is included in this list.
