Why THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is An Exciting New Chapter for the KOF Series

The King Of Fighters is a fighting game series with some pretty serious pedigree. The first title dropped all the way back on arcade machines in the 90s. 

The latest of the mainline series came out in 2022, the fifteenth game in the main series, and that’s not even counting all of the spin-offs. If a series keeps going for thirty years, you know it’s doing something right.

Now, a new offshoot title is on its way to mobile, and we’re here to talk a bit about it, and what the genre brings to the table if you’re a KOF fan, but not necessarily clued up on the genre.

A New Take On The Classic

Now, THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is not your typical game in the franchise. It’s an idle RPG, a game that focuses on passive progression and upgrading your Fighters to progress better. 

In THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK, you must build your own ideal squad of fighters to tackle different stages. Each fighter brings different strengths and synergies to the party, with some fighters empowering each other.

At the heart of the game is team-building and “synergy.” Each fighter carries unique synergy, such as [Rush], [Fury], [Solid], and more, and certain fighters share Synergy effects that trigger powerful bonuses when placed together. Some synergies, marked by yellow icons, boost the damage of specific fighters, while orange icons provide team-wide stat buffs that strengthen the entire squad. There are even rare “Special” synergies, indicated by star icons, that unlock unique, game-changing effects.

The difference between a team with synergy and one without is huge. In many dungeons and stages, synergy can make or break your run. Take the Blue Doom Colossal battle: just fielding two [Rush] synergy fighters gives a whopping 1500% damage boost. Add in two [Solid] synergy fighters, and you’ll tack on another 750%, bringing the total to an incredible 2250%.

Your team will need to fight their way through different dungeons. As with Idle RPGS, the battles take place automatically without your input. Rather than being responsible for the ins and outs of a fight, you need to keep your team optimized and plan your approach to deal with the obstacles in their way.

If you’re running up against a stage you can’t get past, you might need to upgrade Fighters, or switch up your roster and find some new synergies that give you some more power. Then just wind them up and watch them go again, or get on with some other task and check back in.

And of course, there is much more content and modes to enjoy in THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK, such as Team Battle, Extreme Dojo, and Garden using their own customized deck. In particular, Extreme Dojo and Garden are small-scale competitive modes where players can take over training spots in the dojo (Extreme Dojo) or visit other players’ gardens to steal flower bouquets (Garden). These modes offer light but immersive competitive gameplay.  

The Nostalgic Fighters Are Back

THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK brings a bunch of iconic and beloved Fighters from the KoF series, and drops them in the new format. They’re rendered out as cute little pixel art versions of themselves, inspired by the NEOGEO POCKET COLOR sprites from THE KING OF FIGHTERS R-2. 

You’ll find familiar faces like Kyo Kusanagi and Vice, with a bunch of variations on each of them. The game is set to offer over 100 different fighters at launch, with more to come as content updates roll in. 

Along with the fighters themselves there are over 40 different Supporters who provide their own kind of assistance to the fighters. With that are cosmetic pets, which would also contribute to improving your fighters’ performance, and they are pretty damn cute. 

With the grand launch comes your opportunity to get your hands on some goodies to start you off with a flying start. If you log in you’ll get 3,000 Summons, and you’re guaranteed a Legendary fighter on your first summon, so your team can hit the ground running.
