The longevity and functionality of any electronic device is largely determined by the quality of its construction. The printed circuit board, or PCB, is no exception to this rule. The strength of connections on a PCB can be significantly improved by using the correct adhesives during the assembly process. In fact, proper use of adhesives can reduce costs by eliminating the need for fasteners and even eliminate soldering in some cases. This is why choosing the right type of adhesive is crucial to the success of any PCB project.

To help ensure the best possible outcome, every pcb design and assembly should start with a DFM (design for manufacturability) check. A DFM check reviews all the PCB’s design specifications and flags any potential issues that could affect its function or manufacturability. This prevents costly errors and delays that can otherwise impact a product’s timeline and overall quality.

Adhesives play a crucial role in the assembly process for functions ranging from laminate bonding to strain relief. Selecting the right adhesive for the job is also important, as different types of adhesives are optimized for various circuitry functions. Some of the most common adhesives used in PCB fabrication and assembly are epoxy, acrylic, and silicone.

Solder paste is a greyish substance that mixes tiny metal balls, called solder, with flux, a chemical designed to help the solder melt and bond to a surface. The flux helps to clean and prepare the surface for the metallization and bonding processes that follow. Solder paste must be applied precisely in the correct areas on a PCB to prevent shorts and other defects.

The Role of Adhesives in PCB Design and Assembly

Once the copper has been deposited on the PCB, holes are drilled through the copper and the resulting copper pins need to be attached to the components using the correct types of glues. Epoxy is a popular choice for structural bonding applications, and it can be formulated to have specific properties depending on the application. For example, easy-dispense surface mount adhesives can be engineered to deliver a consistent dot profile and fill voids, while epoxy die attach adhesives have high thermal cycling resistance to protect fragile components from stress related failures.

Lastly, silicone and acrylic adhesives are popular choices for flexible PCBs, due to their excellent flexibility and temperature resistance. These types of adhesives also have good electrical insulation properties and can be formulated to be thermally or electrically conductive, if necessary.

In addition to adhering components to a PCB, some adhesives are used for encapsulation or potting. This process provides mechanical support and improves thermal conductivity, while preventing corrosion and protecting the component against shock or vibration. To reduce the risk of error during assembly, it is important to use adhesives that are designed specifically for flex PCBs and have been tested for dimensional accuracy. This will minimize rework and production time and ensure that the final products meet stringent performance requirements. In addition, utilizing standard or compatible parts is critical to the assembly process and will allow for easier troubleshooting and repairs in case of problems.
