Will SRH qualify for playoffs if rain washes out SRH vs GT clash on Thursday?

Currently, SRH are ranked fourth in the IPL 2024 standings with 14 points.

In match No. 66 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are scheduled to face last year’s runners-up Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on May 16. However, the match has been delayed due to continuous rain in Hyderabad.

In the ongoing tournament, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have already qualified for the playoffs. But there are two vacant spots left for five teams to seal their place in the playoffs. SRH came into this game looking to seal a spot in the playoffs, but rain has not let the game start yet.

However, SRH still have a game left in the league stage following this. Meanwhile, other playoffs contenders, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have one game left. Not to be forgotten, mathematically it’s still possible for Delhi Capitals (DC), who have already played their last league game.

Will SRH qualify for playoffs if rain ruins tonight’s game against GT ?

However, SRH don’t have to worry even if rain washes out tonight’s game against GT as they will qualify for the playoffs if it happens so. If the game is washed out due to rain, both the teams will share one point each, and SRH would end up having 15 points following the game, which will enable them to enter the playoffs as only CSK will be the only other team who can reach 15 or more points in the league.

Not only that, SRH will still have a game left and if they win it, they’ll reach a maximum of 17 points. In-case the already qualified Rajasthan Royals don’t win their last league game, and SRH win their last league game, the Hyderabad-based franchise would even finish in the top two.

However, if SRH qualify tonight, there will be four teams in contention for the fourth spot – CSK, RCB, LSG and DC. Given the circumstances that DC have already ended their league stage and they have their NRR in negative figures, it won’t be easy for them to qualify.

RCB and LSG, who have 12 points as of now, will reach a maximum of 14 points if they win their respective last league matches. Meanwhile, CSK also have 14 points to their name, but with a better NRR than other teams fighting for the spot.

With mathematically still everything possible for CSK, RCB, LSG and DC, the battle between RCB and CSK on Saturday most probably might be a virtual qualifier, with the team winning the game, qualifying for the playoffs.
